For some reason I didn't get to see these when I was a kid. Well, there were a few reasons I suppose. I think they were actually banned in South Africa. Ordinarily that wouldn't have made much difference, where there's a will there's a way, and I did manage to see many other great rape fantasies as a child. I think they might have been around, but heavily censored, which would just leave hours of footage of an elderly man muttering, and his stunt double falling down stairs and stuff. So, as I've been home sick, I decided to watch them. I'm really glad I did. I'm not going to go on some OCD spree and explain what I liked from 1-5. In fact, they are already bleeding into each other. My brain couldn't actually be bothered to file these individually, and does it really matter anyway? In every single one (or so it seems), a helpless woman gets gang raped by a group of typical 1980's 'street punks'. These scenes really do go on and on and on. The Death Wish films really are pure exploitation. The kind of flicks that make you want to take a shower. And that's what I like about them.
The punks themselves were fucking great. Jeff Goldblum! Acting like a complete retard. His scenes are pure gold, he couldn't act for shit! I'm sure the director is partly to blame, it's quite obvious he went to an expensive private school in England and wasn't allowed to be friends with rough boys. So his idea of a streetwise badass in New York is pretty hilarious. Fuck it, just have a look for yourself. The expression on his face when they find the women's address is priceless! I'm still completely baffled why the toughs decided to target these two distinctly vanilla broads anyway, I guess it's not important. What's important is that the film has two women, getting raped.
Then there's Lawrence Fishburne. He's a cool ass nigga. All black people are cool ass niggas in the Death Wish universe. They sell drugs and refer to people as "mutha!" a lot. Again, I'm sure Michael Winner meant no disrespect, as he was only basing them on black people he'd seen in other exploitation films, having never actually met one before. Oh, and his idea of intimidating sometimes comes across as...well...gay.
Then, there's little Alex Winter! Yup, Bill or Ted. That guy. Here he is, in part 3 being violently aggressive for no reason.
Death Wish 3 is my favourite by far. It's the 'Road Warrior' of the DW films. Really trying to be modern and hip, trying to capture that 'futuristic' vibe so many films had during that period. It would make a great double feature with 'Class of 1984', another film portraying 80's America as a futuristic dystopia, vigilantism the only way to survive!
There seemed to be a general feeling that the future would be ruled by sneering punk rockers, with lots of hair spray and face paint. I really love this film. If you're going to see at least one of these, then this is your guy.
4 and 5 are pretty 'meh', alright to pass the time.
I'm not really sure what else Michael Winner has done film wise. A lot of people in the UK don't really know or care about his movies - he's more of a 'celebrity' type, food critic, and appeared in a series of ridiculous TV adverts. He has recently announced that he is terminally ill, and may opt for an assisted suicide. I salute you Michael Winner.
Here's a very interesting interview, it's amazing how times have changed.
I had a great time watching these films, so if you haven't seen them, you fucking should, mutha!
