I went to the local video store and rented rob zombie's H2 and then the original H1-H3. I'm pretty sure I hadn't seen any of these before...
H3 was honestly probably my favorite, but the original H2 was fun also.
H1 has some moments, but it felt so dated, especially compared to the hundreds of slashers i've probably seen since it came out... I got pretty bored and almost fell asleep in the middle =/
i liked zombies H2, and i felt it was, from a technical standpoint, the best out of all four of them, but it was far too dark and violent for me to enjoy. i'm actually kind of surprised at all the shit this movie gets. there are a lot of flaws but the acting is good, it's visually stunning, and the characters are far more fleshed out than any of the originals (maybe too much).
i've read and heard a lot of complaining about details that don't even make sense: the hobo beard, eating the dead dog, and the fact that there is actually a reason behind meyers killing rampage. IMO the original movies are so simple any remake would have to flesh things out in that way, just to make the movies relevant.
anyways, i know these movies are a high point of contention for fans. it's different for me looking back on these movies, instead of having grown up with them. what are your guys' thoughts?

That's an interesting point. I don't know how much people look on some of the Halloweens with fondness because of the original being seen as a bit of a trailblazer slasher. I am not actually the world's biggest Michael fan. I prefer Jason overall for the entertainment value. I do realize without Michael, as I have been reminded countless times by lovers of The Shape, there would have been no Jason. But can I understand why you were bored at times? Absolutely.
The original Halloweens I do like (1 & 2. I love 3 but not because it has the stamp of Halloween on it for some reason... money). I respect the first film for what it achieved. My daughter, who is a young teen, has seen Halloween films from the original run of the franchise and had the same complaint as you. She was bored.
Whether or not she would have felt this if she was watching on the films' first releases its impossible to know. The movie business has moved on, as has younger audiences to a certain extent from what was being offered. Nevertheless, as a franchise overall its not one that floats my boat significantly either. RZ's Halloweens I am not a huge fan of. Brutality doesn't bother me in the least. They just irritated me too! Not with the fleshing out of the story that you mentioned. If Zombie had changed nothing he would have been slated. He was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. There just never has been enough bang for my buck with these films.
I know I'm going to cop some flack for this lol!
